Director: Scott Z. Burns
Starring: Adam Driver, Annette Bening, Jon Hamm, Maura Tierney, Michael C. Hall
Adam Driver and Annette Bening give superb performances in this terrifically engrossing drama, a laser-focused look at the US government’s cavalier approach to human rights after 9/11. Driver plays Daniel Jones, a Senate staffer who, tasked with compiling a report on CIA interrogations of terror suspects after 9/11, uncovers documents detailing acts of terrible brutality. But some would rather the military’s ‘Enhanced Interrogation Techniques’ stayed in the shadows, and soon Jones and the report’s commissioner, Senator Dianne Feinstein have a fight on their hands. Director Scott Z Burns nods to the politically conscious thrillers of the ‘70s with this lean and intelligent drama, showing how vital it is that a nation can look clear-eyed into its own darkest moments.
