Horsham Writers Circle presents Campbell's Kingdom (U)

Details Information

A Horsham District Year of Culture Event

undefined

Horsham Writers Circle and The Capitol invite you to a screening of the 1957 film Campbell’s Kingdom - on Tuesday 15th October - starting 7pm. All Tickets £6.

This film is one of the most successful of the films based on the novels of the Horsham author, Hammond Innes. Innes was a wonderful writer, perhaps the most talented and famous adventure writer of the post-war period, and his stories were hugely successful when transformed onto the big screen. Innes was involved in shaping up the particular screenplay.

Campbell's Kingdom is known, too, for being the film that brought the actor (and heartthrob to many), Dirk Bogarde, to international acclaim after he hit the big-time as the doctor in the Doctor in the House series of films.

Providing a roll call of many of the most famous British film actors of the 50’s and 60’s (such as Barbara Murray, Stanley Baker, Michael Craig, James Robertson Justice and even Sidney James) the film is a must-see for anyone interested in British cinema of the mid 20th Century or, indeed for anyone of a certain age, who will inevitable find themselves pointing to the screen and saying ‘I remember him/her … it’s whats’isname/whats’ername?’

Campbell’s Kingdom typifies perfectly the action/adventure pictures of the time. It turned out to be a real blockbuster in Britain, a film with one of the highest attendances for the year (despite the massive ‘flu epidemic that had hit the country).

Hammond Innes features as our Writers Circle’s Literary Figure of the Month of October - one of a series of monthly profiles we’ve been producing this year as our contribution to the Horsham District Year of Culture 2019 programme. You can also obtain a free booklet outlining Innes’s life and contribution to the world of literature, which will be available throughout October in all the District’s libraries (or you can simply download it from horshamwriters.co.uk).

As part of the Horsham District Year of Culture, The Capitol will be hosting a small number of one-off events. These may be larger shows than we might usually accommodate, or simply special things that we think have a particularly interesting cultural appeal. Watch out for the Year of Culture logo throughout the year on our website. To find out more about the Year of Culture click here.
