It’s 1971, and thirty years after their last performance at the famous Weismann Theatre the Follies beauties of years gone by reunite for a show stopping evening of Broadway glitz and glamour, before the Theatre, and former home, is torn down. In this shabby yet sparkling atmosphere of bittersweet nostalgia, the glamourous icons of the roaring 20’s, breath-taking tap dancers of the 30’s and haunting harmony singers of the 40’s laugh, cry, reminisce and boast as they perform the fabulous musical numbers which made them famous, trailed by the ghostly memories of their younger selves.
Against this volatile atmosphere of drunken remembrances, a decades-old love quadrangle receives a revival when Follies dancers Sally and Phyllis, and their husbands, Buddy and Ben meet again. Follies is a loving and brilliant pastiche of show music, full of glorious dance routines and big band numbers delivering a fascinating peek into this by-gone era, and a clear-eyed look at the transformation of relationships over time.
This award winning musical by Sondheim (and recent hit at the National Theatre) should not be missed!
