François Ozon’s urgent, sober new drama tells a true story about the uncovering of child sexual abuse in the French Catholic Church. Alexandre has a traumatic, long-held secret: as a young boy, he was abused by priest Bernard Preynat. Unable to stay silent any longer, he takes his case to Cardinal Barbarin, who initially professes ignorance of Preynat’s crimes – but as an inquiry elicits similar testimonies from other men, Barbarin’s position becomes harder to sustain. Conceived by Ozon ‘in the spirit of Spotlight’, Tom McCarthy’s Oscar winner on the Boston Globe’s investigations into child sexual abuse within the Church, By the Grace of God is similarly haunting, conscientious and well-constructed and researched, a French chapter in what has become an international reckoning.
